¿Sabía usted que la diabetes tipo 1 afecta principalmente a los jóvenes, con una prevalencia que aumenta a un ritmo de 3 por ciento anual?
¿Y sabía usted que la diabetes tipo 2 representa hasta 95 por ciento del total de casos de enfermos por diabetes y su aumento se atribuye a la urbanización, altas tasas de sobrepeso y obesidad, sedentarismo y mal manejo del estrés?
¿Sabía usted que esta enfermedad es responsable de más de un millón de amputaciones al año, de la mayoría de casos de ceguera y es la principal causa de insuficiencia renal en los países en desarrollo?
Y lo anterior, nada más por no mencionar que la diabetes mellitus ocasiona la muerte a 3 millones de personas en el mundo, y la tendencia sigue en aumento, pese a que desde hace años se tiene conocimiento de los mecanismos para prevenir este padecimiento y de la amplia gama de medicamentos para controlar los niveles de azúcar en la sangre.
Hablamos de un problema de descontrol metabólico que afecta hoy a más de 230 millones de personas, es decir, 6 por ciento de la población mundial, a las cuales se suman cada año 6 millones más, incrementandose un 50 por ciento cada dos décadas... bueno, en los países en desarrollo, como el nuestro, el incremento podría ser hasta del 170 por ciento en el mismo periodo, porque de hecho, siete de las 10 naciones con el mayor número de enfermos pertenecen a economías en vías de desarrollo.
Sin hacernos de la vista gorda, México ocupa el quinto lugar mundial de incidencia, porque aca, nada más el 11 por ciento de la población, es decir, 11 por ciento de nuestros vecinos, amigos, familiares y etcétera, tiene diabetes.
Desde el 2000, México ocupa el primer sitio en la tabla de mortalidad general, cada 10 segundos se produce una muerte por alguna complicación derivada del descontrol metabólico, por lo que cada año el número de decesos es de 3 millones, cifra similar a los estragos del VIH/sida. Y aún hay más, porque la tasa en cuestión va a elevarse 25 por ciento en la siguiente década.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud, ese vizantino organismo de la ONU, ha calculado que de persistir esta situación, la diabetes podría reducir la esperanza de vida global por primera vez en 200 años.
¿Y cuales son las acciones que pueden prevenir el que una persona desarrolle Diabetes? Que tal bajar de peso de 5 a 10 por ciento o caminar 30 minutos cinco veces a la semana...
La diabetes mellitus se ha convertido en una pandemia (obviamente a nivel mundial) similar a la del Sida, debido a que el individuo promedio se resiste a romper con su vida sedentaria (hacer ejercicio cotidianamente, vamos) y someterse a una ingesta responsable de alimentos. Los intentos por reducir la incidencia, por parte de los diferentes organismos de salud, no son fructíferos dado que las personas se niegan sistemáticamente a cambiar su estilo de vida con el fin de prolongarla.
El individuo tipo se levanta de prisa por la mañana, come cualquier cosa, antes de correr al trabajo; al medio dia se muere de hambre y toma café y fuma para mitigar la sensación, a la hora de la comida sale a la calle y con los demás del trabajo pide cinco o quince tacos de maciza y un chesco para acompañarlo, fuma su cigarrito y vuelve a su escritorio para seguir con la chamba.
A la hora de la salida, todavía de día con eso del cambio de horario, va a casa a descansar; porque ahora que tiene tiempo para hacer algo distinto a lo que hace en el trabajo, ha decidido no hacer nada para sacudirse un cansancio del que al final no se podrá desprender. En algun momento, mientras hace zapping al televisor, se le ocurre el que la próxima semana quizá salga a correr o se inscriba en algun gimnasio...
Se queda dormido en el sillón mientras una nueva mañana comienza a colarse incidiosamente por la ventana. Se levanta, come cualquier cosa del día anterior, tal vez unas papas Mc Donall's o un trozo de algo e inicia la rutina de todos los días mientras la panza se le va bajando... a las rodillas.
Conocen el desenlace de esta historia: un caso más para agregar el registro de incidencia nacional de diabetes; una campaña que promueve una vida sana y que a nadie sencibilizó; un hombre que muere prematuramente dejando tras de sí a una familia que ira, con su duelo a cuestas, al fast food un poco después de haberse terminado el funeral.
